Announcing the new Mercury V-6 FourStroke Outboard

Mercury Marine recently introduced the brand new naturally aspirated 3.4L, V-6 FourStroke outboard. This outboard is available in  175 hp, 200 hp and 225 horse power. An announcement was made via a Facebook live event last week from the 2018 Miami International Boat Show.

US Boatworks closed on Saturdays for the Winter

It’s sad but true, US Boatworks is now closed on Saturdays through March 2018.  While we may be open shorter hours, we will still be hard at work for our customers.  Our lot is still packed with boats to winterize and we already have some big winter projects for a few individuals. A big chunk of our time will be spent getting ready for next spring as well.

Is your Boat Safe? Find out for free!

The US Coastguard Auxiliary has free tools to check the safety of your boat.  Their Vessel Safety Website allows boaters to become educated on boating safety.  First, download the Vessel Safety Manual to be clear on the rules and regulations regarding boating safety.  Second, do an on-line virtual safety check that addresses of the following:

• Display your boat’s registration number properly
• Keep boat’s registration papers on board
• Have US Coastguard approved lifejackets for everyone on board
• Carry visual distress signals for day and night viewing
• Carry sound producing distress device (whistle, air horn..)
• Keep proper amount of fire extinguishers on board
• Properly ventilate gasoline
• Backfire Flame Control device on board
• Distress sound producing device on board
• Pollution Placard posted if applicable
• Marpol trash placard posted if applicable
• Coastguard approved toilet if applicable
• Navigation rules on boat for reference
• Meet State & Local regulations
• Other safety precautions -deck free of hazards, electrical and fuel systems safe

Once you are in compliance with their guidelines, ask for a free vessel examiner to come to your marina or driveway to inspect your boat. Simply complete the on-line request and someone will be in contact with you. Once passed, you will be awarded a “Vessel Safety Check” decal. This decal alerts US Coastguard and enforcement officials that you are in compliance with the law. Best of all, you will sleep better knowing you are taking family and friend out on the water in a safe vessel.

What you need to Winterize your Outboard or Sterndrive

Winterizing tips for do it yourselfers:

This week temperatures took a dip and it definitely feels like fall outside.  Enjoying these cooler temperatures out on the water should be very tempting right now.  Traffic on the lake will be at a minimum so it might feel like you have the lake to yourself.  While it may be a little chilly for water skiing and tubing, it's a delightful time for a nice drive on the lake or even spending day fishing.

While you are enjoying the last few weeks on the lake, keep in mind that the task of winterizing your outboard or sterndrive is around the corner.  Winterization will need to be completed before the first hard freeze.  So, boaters have a choice of taking their boat in to have it winterized by certified mechanics or performing the task on their own.  Our blog next week will cover tips on having your boat repair shop complete your winterization. If you want to get ahead of the rush, bring your boat into our shop now while the wait is minimal.

For the diy boat mechanic, preparation is key in winterizing your boat.  Having the correct marine grade oil, lube and fuel stabilizer is important to prevent potential damage down the road.  Picking this up at the auto store or large discount chain is not the way to go.  If you are saving money by doing the task yourself, put a tiny bit of that savings towards genuine Mercury Marine, Evinrude, Johnson or Volvo-Penta oils and lubes.   Below is a list of  what you need before you begin winterization.

Underwater Rescue Team Relies on US Boatworks

KMBC 9 News recently featured an article about the work of volunteers at the Underwater Rescue and Recovery team of Lee's Summit.  These awesome individuals train every month to be sure their skills in water rescue are in top shape.  The team not only helps in the Lee's Summit area but assists in the greater Kansas City Metro area as well as out of town rescues.  With heavy rains in the area the last few days, we realize how important this crew is to the safety of those caught in these frightening storm waters.  We wonder how many lives have been saved as a result of these volunteers.

 The Underwater Rescue Team must insure their equipment is always in top working order so they my respond at a moments notice.  Equipment failure at anytime could mean the difference of saving a life or not.  The Team relies on US Boatworks to keep their Mercury outboard motors in top running condition.  We are proud to serve the team and love that they understand the value of using Mercury Certified Master Mechanics.  Our knowledgable staff has been happy to keep them safely on the water over the years.  If the Underwater Rescue Team relies on US Boatworks, shouldn't you?
